Petition update from the council, 21 October 2019

Dear Mr Eccles

I am writing regarding the petition which you had posted on the Runnymede Borough Council website requesting that the path at Heathervale Recreation Ground be resurfaced. As you may be aware the petition closed on the 13th October and received 18 signatures.

In order for the Council to formally consider a petition 50 signatures are normally required.

As a parks department we have a variety of parks and open spaces with paths which range from very rough to smooth. We have to be realistic and accept that we cannot provide smooth paths in all of our parks and where we do we may only be able to provide them in areas where there is highest foot fall.

I have visited Heathervale Recreation Ground with our Health and Safety advisor. The surface of the path that extends round the southern boundary of Heathervale Recreation Ground is a little uneven in places however we not consider it dangerous. There are a number of tarmac paths elsewhere in the park for people to use. We have costed resurfacing this area and estimate that it would be approximately £17500.

We do not consider that we can justify resurfacing the whole path however we will endeavour to repair the rougher areas with a material similar to that already found on site over a period of time.

I hope that helps. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me .

More details from petition creator

Heathervale Park is enjoyed by many local residents as a place to stroll or exercise. The pathway around the northern part of the park has been relaid/resurfaced to a reasonable standard However, the pathway around the Western, Eastern and Southern areas has deteriorated to an unacceptable extent. The path is very uneven, to the point where it is easy to trip or stumble. It is also extremely uncomfortable for any wheelchair users or mums with child buggies to negotiate. We ask that this path is relaid to a good standard. Thank you.
