Petition update from the council, 27 April 2017

Runnymede Borough Council will pass through the concerns of the petition signatures to Surrey County Council, who have produced a Rail Strategy for Surrey, and to Network Rail, who are responsible for the rail network infrastructure. Either organisation may wish to discuss the idea as well with the recent rail franchise winner for this area, First Group.

The implications for traffic and congestion associated with level crossings for the local area is well understood by all parties and is being reviewed as part of ongoing discussion of local infrastructure and growth.

The petitioner has the right to appeal to the Overview and Scrutiny Committee if it is felt the Council has not dealt with the petition appropriately.

More details from petition creator

The current Addlestone railway station with automated level crossing is outdated and unsafe for the railway, public and transport using it. The required increase in housing having led to a significant and on-going increase in population and vehicles in the borough has made the level crossing a hindrance for traffic and resulted in a safety issue for the public crossing roads between queuing transport with impatient drivers. The railway is built on an embankment and has level track for over 2klm on each side of the station so the only reason it could not be dropped to allow the free crossing of traffic over a new bridge would be the cost involved. But given the heavy amount of investment into our new town centre and housing projects in the borough. In my opinion we have to remove the obstacle of the level crossing as soon as we can. The longer we leave it the worse the situation will become.
